512 Hz for Rinne & Weber Hearing Tests

Rinne Test

Compares air conduction with bone conduction in an individual ear and can provide bedside information regarding a possible conductive component of hearing impairment.

Weber Test

Rinne and Weber are bedside screening examinations. They do not independently measure the degree of hearing loss or determine a complete audiological diagnosis. Formal audiometry may be required where clinically indicated.

256 Hz as an Intermediate Clinical Frequency

The 256 Hz tuning fork produces more tactile vibration than the 512 Hz model while also producing an audible tone.

It may be used in selected bone-conduction, hearing and sensory demonstrations and is useful in medical teaching for comparing the characteristics of lower- and higher-frequency tuning forks.

Although 256 Hz can be used during some hearing-test techniques, 512 Hz is commonly preferred for routine Rinne and Weber examination because it produces less troublesome tactile vibration.

1024 Hz for Higher-Frequency Auditory Assessment

Higher Audible Pitch

The 1024 Hz fork provides a substantially higher acoustic frequency than the other three forks in this set.

Shorter Tone Duration

Higher-frequency tuning forks generally have a shorter useful tone-decay period, which is one reason the 512 Hz fork is normally preferred for routine Rinne and Weber testing.

How a Medical Tuning Fork Works

A tuning fork consists of a handle connected to two parallel prongs or tines. When activated, the tines vibrate at their defined nominal frequency and produce both mechanical vibration and an audible tone.
