Schiotz Tonometer

Mechanical indentation tonometer for measurement of intraocular pressure, supplied with three measuring weights, conversion table and protective deluxe carrying case for professional ophthalmic use.

Schiotz Tonometer for Intraocular Pressure Measurement

The IndoSurgicals Schiotz Tonometer is a mechanical ophthalmic instrument used for indentation tonometry and assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP).

Intraocular pressure measurement forms an important part of ophthalmic examination and is particularly relevant in the assessment and monitoring of patients with glaucoma, ocular hypertension and other conditions associated with altered IOP.

The instrument incorporates a plunger system, agate bearing, clear graduated scale and red pointer for convenient reading. It is supplied with three weights and a conversion table for translating the instrument scale reading into an estimated intraocular pressure value in mmHg.

Key Features

IOP

Intraocular Pressure Measurement

Designed for mechanical indentation tonometry as part of professional ophthalmic IOP assessment.

AG

Agate Bearing

The agate bearing supports mechanical movement within the measuring system.

0-20

Graduated Scale

Scale graduated from 0 to 20 subdivisions with additional 0 to -1 sub-division as specified for the instrument.

RED

Clear Red Pointer

Contrasting red pointer improves visibility and makes the scale reading convenient to observe during testing.

SS

Metal Construction

Vital components are manufactured from stainless steel, with other components chrome-plated for durability.

CASE

Complete Deluxe Case

Supplied in a blue deluxe case for secure storage, protection and convenient transportation.

How a Schiotz Tonometer Works

Indentation Tonometry

The Schiotz Tonometer uses a weighted plunger that produces a controlled indentation of the cornea. The degree of indentation depends partly on the resistance offered by the eye and is transmitted mechanically to the instrument pointer.

Scale Reading & Conversion

The pointer indicates a value on the Schiotz scale. This scale value is not itself the IOP in mmHg. The reading is interpreted using the supplied conversion table together with the weight used during the examination.

Schiotz tonometry should be performed by appropriately trained healthcare professionals according to accepted ophthalmic examination, anaesthesia, cleaning, disinfection and calibration protocols.

Supplied with Three Measuring Weights

The instrument is supplied with three standard weight configurations to extend the useful measuring range during intraocular pressure assessment.

5.5 g Standard Measuring Weight
7.5 g Additional Measuring Weight
10 g Additional Measuring Weight

Scale & Conversion Table

Schiotz tonometry uses an instrument scale rather than displaying intraocular pressure directly in millimetres of mercury.

Scale: 0-20 Subdivisions

The mechanical pointer indicates the amount of indentation on the graduated Schiotz scale.

IOP Conversion Table

The supplied conversion table is used together with the selected weight and scale reading to obtain the corresponding estimated intraocular pressure in mmHg.

Easy-to-Read Red Pointer

The contrasting red pointer provides clear visual differentiation against the graduated measuring scale, helping the examiner obtain a convenient scale reading.

Agate Bearing

Consistent mechanical movement is important to the operation of an indentation tonometer. The IndoSurgicals Schiotz Tonometer incorporates a agate bearing designed to support smooth movement of the measuring mechanism and support the measuring mechanism.

Correct handling, calibration, cleaning and maintenance of the instrument remain important for maintaining appropriate performance in clinical use.

Stainless Steel & Chrome-Plated Construction

Stainless Steel Vital Parts

Vital instrument components are manufactured from stainless steel to provide mechanical strength, durability and suitability for repeated professional use.

Chrome-Plated Components

Other metallic components are chrome-plated, providing a finished surface and the traditional professional appearance associated with the instrument.

Clinical Applications

Measurement of intraocular pressure is an important component of a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. The Schiotz Tonometer provides a portable mechanical method for IOP assessment and can be useful in a variety of professional eye-care environments.

Important Clinical Considerations

The Schiotz Tonometer is a contact indentation tonometer. Appropriate clinical use depends not only on the instrument itself but also on correct positioning, appropriate patient preparation, calibration, choice of weight and correct interpretation of the scale reading.

Because the Schiotz scale does not directly represent IOP in mmHg, the appropriate conversion table must be used when recording the pressure result.

Intraocular pressure is only one component of glaucoma assessment. IOP measurements should be interpreted by a qualified eye-care professional together with other relevant clinical findings. The instrument should be cleaned, disinfected and checked according to applicable clinical protocols before and after use.
