Localised Shielding Without Obscuring Required Anatomy
The shawl is designed for applicable scoliosis and spinal radiography where shielding of the breast and adjacent anterior thoracic region is appropriate without unnecessarily obstructing the spinal imaging field. Positioning should be determined by the responsible imaging professional and current facility protocol.
Patient shielding should not be applied automatically if it could obscure required anatomy, interfere with exposure control or reduce diagnostic usefulness.
Higher Lead Equivalency Applies Only Where Equal Layers Directly Overlap
The long protective panels can be folded and retained using the hook-and-loop provision. Where two equal protective sections directly overlap, their stated lead equivalencies are additive within that overlapped region only.

Approximately 0.50 mm Pb total in the directly overlapped area; non-overlapped areas remain 0.25 mm Pb.
0.50 + 0.50 mm Pb
Approximately 1.00 mm Pb total in the directly overlapped area; non-overlapped areas remain 0.50 mm Pb.

Protect the Shielding Core and Folding Areas
Use the designed folding points and hook-and-loop provision rather than creating sharp uncontrolled folds. Avoid crushing or unnecessary compression, inspect the garment according to the facility's radiation-protection programme, and use cleaning methods compatible with the outer surface and shielding construction.
